jane austen book club review

Therefore, Jocelyn invites Grigg (Hugh Dancy), an attractive young man she met at a hotel bar, to join them. During their discussions, each member of the Jane Austen Book Club reveals their own "private Austen" (i.e., confusion about love) to the others. Jane Austin Book Club is half of a good movie. It was a big task to try and cover six books in one film. But, one day, Daniel drops the big bombshells that he is seeing another woman and that he wants a divorce. However, as I've learned here, sometimes there's a greater risk to seeing the film first. And Hugh Dancy is really delightful as the sci-fi reading, computer geek who is the club's only male member. And to me, they might as well have called this movie the Soap Opera Fan Club, or the Jackie Collins Fan Club. I suppose that's true, but only just.

He genuinely looks befuddled, especially when the object of his affection, Jocelyn, pushes him to court her best friend instead. Check box if your review contains spoilers, Six book-club members, six Austen books, and six story-lines are interwoven over six months in the busy modern setting of Sacramento, where city and suburban sprawl meet natural beauty.

(If you've ever been in a book club, you'll understand.) It had good acting. Maria Bello (A History of Violence) is particularly good as Jocelyn a woman who won’t open herself up to a meaningful relationship preferring to lavish affection on her canine best friends. First impressions of this book were amazing. The only drawback could be that Jane Austen tends to be sappy—but it is its exuberance for Jane Austen and her work that gives the film its pulse.

What might've worked in the Karen Joy Fowler novel, doesn't all translate well on the screen. Even though this film came out weeks after "Dan in Real Life", there are many ways in which they resemble each other, and I'm glad I did see "Club" second so I can understand how "Dan" didn't quite achieve its goals, and "Club" soars above many of its contemporary counterparts. But there's something a little removed about watching a movie about a book club about Jane Austen. Parents and caregivers: Set limits for violence and more with Plus. Strong Cast Enlivens a Superficial Female Fantasy Layering Modern-Day Soap Opera Elements Upon Austen's Works. Based on the novel of the same name “The Jane Austen Book Club” explores the parallels between the club's members and the particular Austen novel they have chosen to read. Blunt again proves herself talented with a storyline that's at once scandalous and poignant, and Brenneman stands out as a wife blindsided by her husband's infidelity. Let's get one thing out of the way, first. And if I can't have the above, then can there at least be some explicit sex please? In short, book yourself a showing of this film and invited your friends to join you at the viewing. It's entertaining and usually that's enough. I have personally never read her novels, although tempted, just have watched the 1996 version of the movie of her Sense and Sensibility over 20 times perhaps. Instead Swicord focuses her attention on the intertwining relationships as they relate to Jane Austen’s nine novels. A Notting Hill misfire from the wrong side of the pond-I found the same flaws in that but at least it was clever enough to draw an occasional smile. Parents need to know that Austen-loving teen girls might be drawn to this movie by the promise of lots of Austen talk (not to mention the presence of Hugh Dancy). I have never read Jane Austin. Still, most Jane Austen fans will probably like the film and I would recommend it to them because of the many references to her novels. Two women cavort in bed -- the camera zooms to their midriffs -- and flirt while one's in the bathtub; a teenager propositions his married teacher, whom he kisses passionately in the car; later, they make a date to meet outside a hotel, and the teacher is shown changing into sexier clothing beforehand. Fowler's novel is about a California book club consisting of five women (Jocelyn, Bernadette, Sylvia, Allegra, and Prudie) and one man (Grigg), which meets on a monthly basis to discuss the novels of Jane Austen (EMMA, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, PERSUASION).

Thanks to movie adaptations--some great, some so-so--Jane Austen has found a wider audience than she could ever have guessed. I saw this movie at the Toronto Int'l Film Festival and made a point of learning as little as possible about what it was about and who was in it. Austen's enduring popularity has inspired several recently filmed productions of her early 19th century works, and Fowler cleverly interweaves the author's six novels by incorporating her pertinent themes into a contemporary story of manners.
