Among the layoffs is Mike Sampson, the New York-based creative director for Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. Sampson’s job was tied directly to creating and honing Alamo’s programming bells and whistles, one of the major elements that created customer loyalty.
The theater encouraged employees to consult the company’s headquarters if they’re experiencing something different.
A brutal day of layoffs at the Alamo Drafthouse, as over 80 employees have been laid off as the Austin-based cinema chain further cuts costs in the middle of the pandemic. However, no date has been set, and most chains are pushing back dates to late summer and into the fall.
However, the theater chain affirmed that it will continue to provide health insurance through the end of March to affected staff members, and is also putting together a charitable relief fund for temporarily laid-off workers.
We can help. The closure of Alamo locations is the latest in a wave of cancellations and shutdowns affecting the industry from top to bottom. The remaining hold-out franchisees closed within the week, and the Arizona franchises filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May.
