It is a very transparent tube, smoother & less gritty then the tungsol but has plenty of useable gain. A range of other tube sets for Amps are available here. Recently though I changed out the JJs in V6 and V1 (input tubes for rhythm and lead channels) with Tung-Sol 12AX7s. This portable powerhouse features five 12AX7 preamp tubes and 2 - 6L6GC power amp tubes, with presence and resonance controls and 3-band EQ for taming their notorious tone. Post

I've heard a lot about using Tung-Sols with Chinese 9th gens. It looks like V5 (fourth tube from the right) is the cathode-follower. Smooth & powerful.

When I got my 6505+ it was tubed with JJ ECC83s in the gain slots and Sovtek LPSs in the effects loop and PI slots.
You may prefer the grittiness of the tung-sol, but with all those tungsols & JJ's in there, I still feel certain you'll like it more than at least one of them. The new 6505 Plus 112 combo harnesses the full gain and legendary tone of the Peavey 6505 Series, which since 1991 has defined the sounds of extreme rock guitar, into a format that is equally suited to clubs, rehearsal rooms and studios. The Rhythm channel also includes a footswitchable Crunch boost. It looks like the next change will be a Tung-Sol in V2. Do yourself a favor when you order back-ups and include a Mullard re-issue 12ax7 in the bunch. I dont play metal, either.
I am not a fan of JJ pre amp tubes and I would certainly discourage an all JJ tube compliment. I recently bought this amp, Im not sure of the age but my friend bought it 2 years ago used and it still has the original ruby tubes in it. If the goodness from the last change continues it should be pretty sweet.

Just what I needed and more - I say that because my combo peavey 6505+ really only needed 5 small tubes and 2 power tubes, so I literally have tubes left over. Additional features include three-spring reverb, effects loop and external speaker outputs, plus a 12″ Sheffield® loudspeaker in a sealed-back cabinet that offers maximum resonance and sound projection.
