drawing the line hampstead theatre cast

Hampstead Theatre has been in NW3 for over 50 years, occupying one of London’s state-of-the-art theatres, and attracting audiences from all over the globe. Hampstead Theatre is delighted to announce its cast for the premiere of Howard Brenton’s new play. Howard Brenton and Howard Davies reunite following Hampstead’s critically acclaimed and sell-out hit 55 Days last year. It premiered from 3 December 2013 to 11 January 2014, in a production directed by Howard Davies at London's Hampstead Theatre. A somewhat daunting prospect for somebody who had never been to India or had any previous experience in making maps or the division of territory. Brenton’s play sketches out history in very broad brushstrokes. As he began to break under the pressure he came to realise that he held in his hands the fate of millions of people. The British prime minister, Clement Attlee (a too tall but suitably finicky, pipe-smoking John MacKay), sets a timetable of just five weeks for Radcliffe (Tom Beard, strikingly similar to Colin Firth) “to lift the yoke of imperialism,” while all factions bicker at the Viceroy’s front door, Gandhi (a fragile Tanveer Ghani) remains aloof to politics, and Lucy Black’s vivacious Edwina Mountbatten tries to manoeuvre her torrid affair with the charismatic Nehru of Silas Carson into a bartering block of influence. Paul Bazely’s previous stage work includes Really Old Like 45, Hamlet, The Waiting Room, Richard III (National Theatre), The Djinns of Eidgah, East is East (Royal Court) and Twelfth Night (West End). Film includes Tezz, Four Brothers And A Funeral and Bend It Like Beckham. The Hampstead Theatre will re-release live stream recordings of some of its archive productions for free, it was announced today.

Radcliffe was the man to whom British prime minister Atlee delegated the task of drawing the boundary line between the newly independent countries of India and Pakistan. As it dawns on him that that he is a “patsy”, and a lonely one at that, we are shown an honourable man it is hard not to feel for.

In 1947, when the story begins, Radcliffe is a judge in London. There’s the militant Gandhi and the Mountbattens’ private lives to spice things up. Wholly unsuited to his role, Radcliffe was unprepared for the dangerous whirlpool of political intrigue and passion into which he is plunged; one of religious and racial turmoil, blood feuds and even an illicit liaison between the Leader of the Congress Party and the Viceroy’s wife. However, watching this production has certainly opened up my eyes to an interesting part of history and the influence the United Kingdom had over that area of the world during that period.

Louis Mountbatten, last Viceroy of India, and his wife are given a lot of work to do and, while Andrew Havill and Lucy Black give strong performances, it’s difficult to care about their characters. With great good humour and a fine eye for the historically telling detail, Brenton shows how Radcliffe starts off as the quintessentially confident Englishman – he has gone to the right schools, had the right jobs and belongs to the right clubs – and ends up suffering a crisis of confidence.
