Abrams is a fan of the format and that his The Force Awakens had one sequence shot specifically using IMAX cameras using the full 1.43.1 aspect ratio. Dolby Cinema projectors supposedly produce slightly deeper blacks than IMAX with Laser, but both systems use similar underlying tech. Compared to IMAX 70mm ("true IMAX"), contrast ratios are better, but there is some "speckle" in bright areas due to laser interference. IMAX went digital a little too early and committed to 2K projectors, but I'm hoping that will pressure more venues to upgrade.
