[3] The novel was all but ignored when it first appeared, but became better known in the 1930s, as the neo-romantic revival gathered pace. Uneducated and wilful, Hazel is a dark haired beauty of wild, gypsy appearance and along with her unusual, instinctive relationship with animals, in particular, a stray fox she has adopted, is obviously set quite apart from the rest of the God-fearing village community where she and father eke out an existence. Edward Marston Sybil Thorndike. He marries Hazel but 'respects' her too much to touch her and so does not consummate the marriage.

Don Berghuis, The films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger are celebrated, not necessarily for their story lines, but for their exquisite attention-to- detail. This film is shot on the Welsh borders as they were in 1949, and in Shropshire. The most infamous of the alterations are the scenes at the end when Jones is supposedly carrying a tame fox—in the additional scenes, she is carrying what is obviously a stuffed toy fox. The film was significantly changed for the American market by David O. Selznick and retitled The Wild Heart in 1952. Hazel Woodus David Farrar. But the small snippets of it I'd caught made me steadfastly wait for the day I could view it, and having done so, I can say it's considerably better than its fairly middling reputation. Local squire Jack Reddin (David Farrar) sees Hazel and wants her, but she has already promised herself to the Baptist minister, Edward Marston (Cyril Cusack). Set ninety-seven years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization, when a spaceship housing humanity's lone survivors sends one hundred juvenile delinquents back to Earth… A strange series of solar flares proves fatal for inhabitants of the Earth, except for the fortunate few who are somehow immune to the effects. Peter Graves starred as a horse rancher in the series Fury (1955). Symbolism is worthy of any good Lawrencian story where love is in opposition to nature and where sex can only survive outside marriage. It is there that she is found by the local squire, Jack Reddin, finds her and is struck by her beauty. The reviewers had slated it and the audience around me was distinctly hostile. Her works show the obvious influence of Thomas Hardy, one of the founders of that school, and her novel "Gone to Earth" deals with two classically Hardeian themes- a woman who is loved by two or more different men, and love between people of different social classes. "You're right, it's sure been a long time." Over the last ten years or so,I have been hearing a lot of people, from directors in great documentary's to people in the local DVD shop having conversations, and giving endless praise to what seems to be one of the now-most loved film making duo of the last sixty years:Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell. And whilst I have seen some clips of A Matter of Life and Death and Peeping Tom,they have always been near the top of my list,of film makers whose work I should search out for. Animals go insane and human beings turn to white powder, leaving behind only empty clothing. Other examples that have stayed with me were 1974's "Dying Room Only" with Cloris Leachman, and 1970's "The Neon Ceiling." Nevertheless, the cinematography is stunning as ever, and the choir, and the harp playing, are divine indeed -- as always with P&P, there are gems even in this murky, overheated yarn of country parson versus country squire.

| Gone To Earth 1950 Rotten Tomatoes. Longner Hall, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, UK (Squire Reddin's House) 2 of 2 found this interesting Interesting? For some reason the Industry moved out of Shropshire leaving behind a few traces such as the mine shafts, one of which figures so tragically in this film and others such as the first ever iron bridge which of course can be found at Ironbridge near where the film was made.   |

Her only friends are half-tame forest animals, notably a fox she's raised. An unlikely co-production between the British Archers production company, comprising Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and dictatorial Hollywood mogul David O Selznick, unsurprisingly starring the latter's wife Jennifer Jones, "Gone To Earth" is a visually remarkable and emotionally turbulent feature.

David O Selznick presents a textbook example of how not to edit a film; this is the hacked, reordered, and partly re-shot version of Powell and Pressburger's 'Gone to Earth'.

This film is one of the Powell and Pressburger films that have received less attention than many of their more well-known works, and it is a real beauty of a film. Jones looks great. A New Statesman review claimed the restored film to be "One of the great British regional films" and, according to Powell's cinematographer, Christopher Challis, "one of the most beautiful films ever to be shot of the English countryside".[8]. These were very serious and even frightening scenarios, and even schlock films like 1973's "Horror At 37,000 Feet" and 1974's "Killdozer" were edgy, truly unique, and highly entertaining.

If it was a painting it would be by John Constable who captured the special something that Gone To Earth epitomises. about a wild child in rural England in 1897.

The finished film owes a lot to Christopher Challis' superb photography and Brian Easedale's music. Yes No.

This film can be watched repeatedly by those who want to comprehend a world that is gone forever, like that of the film 'Owd Bob' (see my review of it).

Among the strangest, and loveliest, of the Archers films.

I had to wait many years before I heard good things being said about "Gone to Earth".

Zachary David Alexander Efron was born October 18, 1987 in San Luis Obispo, California, to Starla Baskett, a secretary, and David Efron, an electrical engineer. One of the finest performances is by Hugh Griffith as Farrar's valet. She is given a rough time by her father but can escape to run barefoot through the woods when her harsh life gets too much for her. It was a Sunday in August.

Whenever she has problems, she turns to the book of spells and charms left to her by her gypsy mother.

The little church ( Godshill ) in the film is still standing and you can still make out the shape of the baptism pool in the garden. There was a lot of fidgeting and derisory shouts.

I have searched for a long time for this movie...but all I could truly remember of it , with the obvious exception of Miss Jones, was the scream or shout at the end of it ----Gone to Earth.

It stars Jennifer Jones, David Farrar, and Cyril Cusack, and features Esmond Knight.

[US version]: Hazel Woodus, beautiful English gypsy, lives with her harpist father and believes implicitly in her dead mother's charms and superstitions.

I hadn't intended seeing it more than once on this occasion but I can recall being so mesmerised that I watched the programme through three times. The obvious conflict develops when the squire leads the local hunt and tries to kill Hazel's pet fox. Half gypsy, the girl (Jennifer Jones) worships nature, animals, superstitions, etc.
