Another occasion where the cover is better than the original, Pearl Jam’s version of Victoria William’s ‘Crazy Mary’ is evocative to the last note. Chan Marshall made a couple of albums out of cover songs, ‘The Covers Record’ and ‘Jukebox’. Buckley’s version of Leonard Cohen is that rare thing: a cover better than its original. ‘In The Pines’ has been around since the 19th century, reversioned and covered by a wide spectrum of artists from Lead Belly to Joan Baez and Dee Dee Ramone to Kid Cudi. Another one that has been covered by everyone from George Michael to Prince. Kurt Cobain’s screaming last verse is especially moving. The acoustic cover of pop superstar track ‘Crazy In Love’ is unexpectedly soft, with Antony Johnson’s inimitable vocals crooning over piano, strings and clarinets. Grizzly Bear’s slowed and stripped back version leaves a sense of poignancy lingering behind.
